People warned to use caution on Beaver Creek Reservoir

People fishing or walking on Beaver Creek Reservoir should take extra precautions as the ice could become less stable, Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson said Tuesday.

Peterson said that in January it was noticed a "weep" or small leak developed in the pressure chamber of Beaver Creek Dam. The dam's guardian gate was closed Feb. 1 to examine the weep and decide how to move forward.

The gate was reopened last Tuesday, Peterson said.

As the water level on the lake has risen and is now going down, the ice could be less stable, he said.

Hill County officials, he said, have been in discussions with Great West Engineering of Helena and when the weather gets warmer, will look to determine the cause of the weep and make the needed fixes.
